When Veganuary Ends, Your Vegan Journey Doesn’t Have To


Veganuary is an exciting time – whether you’re newly vegan, trying plant-based eating for the first time, or you’ve been living compassionately for years. It’s a month that invites everyone, without judgement, to explore a way of eating that’s kinder to animals and better for the planet.

However, the impact of these choices does not need to end in January. Continuing beyond Veganuary is important because the realities faced by farmed animals persist throughout the year. Through years of investigation and advocacy, we have documented the ongoing suffering experienced by millions of animals within the animal agriculture industry who are cruelly slaughtered for human consumption.

Our exposés have revealed egregious practices, like mother pigs confined to cages so small they are unable to turn around or properly care for their young. Their piglets are subjected to painful procedures including ‘tail-docking’ (where their tails are cut off) and teeth-grinding, without pain relief. We have filmed cows being torn from their young calves, sheep being beheaded, and more recently, disturbing cases of fish being hammered to death by children, as well as salmon abandoned to die from disease or be eaten alive by flesh-eating lice.

Animals are harmed on a vast scale on farms and in abattoirs and, while we must help those trapped in the system, ultimately the most effective way to reduce animal suffering is to leave them off our plates. Choosing to continue eating plant-based beyond January is a meaningful step that helps save animals, supports more sustainable food systems, and aligns everyday choices with compassion year-round.

During January, inspiration is everywhere. Supermarkets roll out new plant-based products, favourite items suddenly have vegan alternatives, and recipes flood our screens, teaching us about substitutions, seasoning, and flavours we may never have tried before.

And then February arrives.

And your motivation does not have to slow down! You can still eat delicious plant-based food and have treats all year long. January is not the end.
