Call for Olympic Chefs To Get Foie Gras Out of the 2024 Olympic Games! – ACTION NOW CLOSED
The production of foie gras, which involves force-feeding until the livers of ducks and geese become diseased, is incredibly cruel. Ducks and geese are forced to consume unnatural amounts of feed several times a day until their livers swell to up to ten times their natural size. Many bleed, pant, shake, and vomit from the pain and terror inflicted by this process.
Aside from the extreme cruelty involved in its ‘production’, this so-called delicacy is also completely misaligned with the inclusive ethos of the Games. Organisers and head chefs have consciously focused on ‘sustainability’ and ‘responsibility’ this year, so we cannot allow them to serve a dish so cruel that it is a crime to produce in over a dozen countries.
Animal Equality refuses to stand by and watch this cruelty be served, and it’s clear none of our supporters are either. In a matter of weeks, we’ve:
- amassed a staggering 69,500+ signatures on our petition calling on the Committee to drop foie gras from its hospitality menus;
- sent two open letters, the latest signed by experts, celebrities, and athletes, all hammering home to the Committee just how dire this decision is; and
- rallied support on social media, showing the Games’ organisers how strongly people oppose this foul play.
Unfortunately, our efforts have been met with silence. That’s why, in order to remove foie gras from the Games’ menus and show the world how terrible foie gras is, we turned our attention to the chefs involved in the hospitality packages. They undoubtedly have serious influence over what makes it onto plates, potentially saving the lives of thousands of future ducks and geese in the process.
Whilst THIS ACTION IS NOW CLOSED, it was a huge success. Hundreds of Animal Equality supporters left comments on the Instagram pages of hospitality chefs. A number of them proudly expressed that they do not serve foie gras, a recognition of the cruelty it entails.
