Demand your MP stand against the dangerous EU-Mercosur trade deal!
The EU-Mercosur trade agreement threatens to flood EU and UK markets with cheap meat from countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, animal welfare standards are significantly lower than those in the UK and EU.
While the best choice for consumers concerned about animals and the planet is to avoid meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and processed products containing them, these items remain widely available in supermarkets. Many processed products currently lack clear information about where the meat comes from and the conditions in which the animals were raised. This is due to loopholes in labelling laws, which only require origin disclosure if a product contains a certain percentage of meat, allowing much imported meat to go unlabelled.
With the EU-Mercosur agreement looming, the volume of cattle and chicken meat entering the EU is expected to rise sharply. Consequently, the risk that processed foods on UK supermarket shelves contain meat from Mercosur countries – without consumers knowing – would increase exponentially. This situation fuels cruelty abroad and escalates a welfare race to the bottom, as producers prioritise efficiency over animal wellbeing.
It is vital that MPs hear from concerned constituents demanding they oppose this harmful agreement, call for strong safeguards and transparency, and protect high welfare and environmental standards.
