IMPACT REPORT
Autumn 2024

Nine months, 11.6 million animals.

This is your impact so far…

PROGRESS TOWARDS ENDING FACTORY FARMING

Factory farming confines animals like hens, piglets, and calves in terrible conditions, subjecting them to painful lives and deaths. Together, we’re fighting to put an end to this suffering.

1. Stronger legal protection for animals

Thanks to you, we’ve made substantial progress towards stronger animal protection laws. In July, Colima, Mexico, became the second state to pass legislation protecting farmed animals, benefiting nearly nine million animals. Animal Protectors also displayed a 10-metre banner on historic monuments, calling for animals to be recognised in the Mexican Constitution.

In Germany, the Animal Welfare Act is being revised for the first time in 10 years. Advocates protested for stronger farmed animal protections, and we submitted two statements to the Government. These statements urged for bans on live exports, mutilations, and horse slaughter.

2. Holding animal abusers accountable

Your support is holding companies accountable for their crimes across the globe. Here in the UK our investigation exposed disturbing practices on a Red Tractor-certified pig farm supplying Tesco.

In 2018, Animal Equality and TV’s Jordi Évole documented cruelty at a Spanish pig farm. After the farm owners were initially acquitted, we successfully appealed, and a new trial is set to begin. And in Italy, Animal Equality’s Vice-President for Europe, Matteo Cupi, presented his investigative findings on factory farming at Milan’s Palace of Justice. In India, an investigation was launched revealing illegal slaughter practices in the dairy industry and encouraging a shift toward plant-based alternatives.

3. Justice for fish

Here in the UK, we gained High Court permission to challenge the construction of the first onshore salmon mega-farm, a facility that would confine up to a million fish annually.

Another recent UK investigation exposed disturbing practices on a salmon farm, where workers were filmed removing dead fish from the farm just hours before a Scottish Parliament fact-finding tour. This helped strengthen calls to halt industry expansion.

You’re also making strides for fish protection in Mexico. Alongside academic researchers, we revealed that over 477 million individual fish are killed in the country annually – a powerful figure that challenges how fish are usually measured by the tonne.

Love Veg, Animal Equality’s
plant‑based program

Choosing plant-based meals is one of the most powerful ways to end animal suffering. Visit Love Veg for delicious recipes, nutrition advice, and tips on making plant-based eating enjoyable.

In Mexico, a new campaign featured three original recipe books of traditional Mexican dishes and two plant-based workshops for university-level Dietetics students. Meanwhile, over 3,500 students in Pune City, India, were inspired through our plant-based school programmes.

END CAGES FOR HENS AND PIGS

Many mother pigs and hens spend their lives in cramped cages, unable to move freely. Despite bans in some states and countries, this cruelty persists worldwide.

Alongside our dedicated supporters, we continued to campaign against cages in Aldi’s US supply chain. This includes protests in Chicago and the Bronx, New York City, and Aldi’s hometown of Berlin, Germany. With videos, flyers, and even a life-size cage, advocates like you showed how pregnant pigs are confined throughout their pregnancies.

In addition, in the US, the campaign against Denny’s, to end the cruel confinement of mother pigs through full-page ads in local newspapers and digital platforms continues to put pressure on this company.

In Mexico, Palladium Hotels has committed to phasing out caged eggs in Latin America, thanks to your support. In India, 40 companies are moving to cage-free eggs, with some already reaching 70% compliance. While cage-free doesn’t mean cruelty-free, it takes us one step closer to our end goal!

END HORSE SLAUGHTER

Horses, like dogs and cats, are often seen as companions. Yet, thousands of US horses are transported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

Thanks to the support of people like you, we continue to fight against the export of horses for slaughter through the SAFE Act. Thousands of activists like you have contacted legislators, urging them to support the bill.
