Force feeding foie gras

A Promise Made. A Promise at Risk.

The UK Government pledged to ban the importation of cruel foie gras. Now reports suggest they may quietly abandon that commitment. Your MP has the power to change that.

The UK Government promised to ban foie gras imports. We’re holding them to it.

Before the 2024 general election, the Labour Party made a clear commitment: to ban the importation of foie gras – a product created by aggressively force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers become diseased. This commitment resonated with millions of British voters who believe that if it’s too cruel to produce, it’s too cruel to import.

Foie gras production has been banned in the UK for nearly two decades. The practice involves metal pipes being forced down birds’ throats multiple times a day, causing immense suffering. Importing this product undermines our own standards and sends a deeply contradictory message.

Reports now suggest that the Government may be considering quietly stepping back from this commitment as part of broader trade negotiations. This cannot be allowed to happen.

The fight to end foie gras in Britain

Animal Equality is campaigning for a UK foie gras import ban. We have delivered petitions, briefed parliamentarians, and gathered evidence from inside the farms where this product is made. The cruelty is documented and undeniable.

  • Ducks and geese are force-fed significant quantities of grain per day via a metal pipe inserted directly into their throats, several times a day.
  • Livers swell to ten times their natural size, approximately the size of a small football. Birds often cannot stand or breathe normally by the time they are slaughtered.
  • Production is already banned in the UK, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and over a dozen other countries – yet imports remain legal under current rules.

END THE CRUELTY

Foie gras is immensely cruel. Its production causes ducks and geese severe physical and psychological pain. You can protect ducks and geese by opting for plant-based alternatives.
