Imagine being born and raised on a factory farm. Your short, monotonous life is full of pain and fear. Then at the end of your life, you are forced into a dark, loud, filthy truck with your family, and sent to your terrifying death.

Live Transport Rally

Every year, millions of live sheep, cattle and pigs are transported thousands of miles in trucks and on ships from Europe, to be slaughtered in other countries around the world. These animals endure excessively long journeys without enough food, water or rest. Crammed in together, some with no space to sit down, they can be in transit for days on end, in extreme temperatures. The stress caused to the animals by this experience leads to lowered immune systems and rapid spread of disease.

When the trucks are emptied at their destination, many, many animals are dead or dying. Shockingly, the UK and Ireland send thousands of sheep and cattle to Europe every year, from where, they go on to the Middle East, and North Africa. Pigs are sent even further, from the UK directly to China.

Many animals will be exported from Europe to countries that have lower animal welfare standards, or none at all to protect them. Their transport and slaughter would often be considered illegal under UK and European law.

Last year the Scottish salmon industry reported over one thousand weekly lice counts exceeding the industry’s own Code of Good Practice (CoGP) lice guidelines. This revelation comes in sharp contrast to industry claims and just days after a spokesperson for Salmon Scotland boasted to the Press and Journal that sea lice levels are “among the lowest on record”.

Despite the Scottish Government stating that unannounced inspections of salmon farms are a ‘legislative requirement’, a key regulator carried out none in 2023 or 2025, and just two in 2024; the other regulator does not track unannounced inspections at all. The revelations have prompted accusations that oversight of Scotland’s salmon farming industry is ‘not fit for purpose’.
